University of Kansas
In 1866, the University of Kansas welcomed the first class of 55 students to an unfinished building on a treeless ridge called Mount Oread.
Today, our enrollment sits at 28,500. From that single building, we have grown to five campuses — the Lawrence campus, the Edwards Campus in Overland Park, and medical branches in Kansas City, Wichita, and Salina. The once barren landscape has grown into a wooded campus considered one of the most beautiful in the nation.
We embrace our role as the state’s flagship university and a premier research institution, serving the state, nation, and world. We celebrate the energy and compassion that infuse the Jayhawk spirit. And we remain true to our historic values: the elevating force of education, the transformative power of research, and the healing power of service.

It doesn't matter if you ask a longtime professor, recent graduate, passionate alumnus or a fresh-eyed freshman. Pick a member of the K-State community at random and ask him or her what it means to be a Wildcat, and you will most likely get a one-word answer: Family.
K-Staters consider themselves family, and that belief shines through contributions as diverse as our members. Researchers invent solutions to problems that could save a life halfway across the world, and students band together on a Saturday morning for community service. Thousands of Wildcat fans pack our stadiums shouting in unison, and our leadership guides us in ways befitting the obligations of a land-grant university.
In fact, these obligations could be considered our family values, and the many ways we achieve them are the Wildcat Way. We invite you to come along for the ride, because there's always room for one more in the K-State family.

Inspired by our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, our campus fosters a community of inclusion, understanding, and peace. Avila’s Buchanan Initiative for Peace and Nonviolence is a shining example of how we as a campus put these values into action. Our Thornhill Gallery hosts artists, activists, and humanitarian organizations seeking to promote understanding and collaboration. With our newly-opened Avila community food pantry and Eagles Aware sexual harassment program, are creating a safe environment that will allow you to concentrate on what matters most: your education. You’re welcome here.
Avila’s class sizes might be small, but the knowledge you’ll receive from our highly accomplished faculty won’t be. Our professors pair academic expertise – 70 percent have their Ph.D., or the highest degree in their field of study — with real-world, practical experience to give you a well-rounded set of skills sought out by employers. And with our Student Success Center, Learning Commons, and other resources, you’ll have the assistance you need on campus to solve any challenge in or out of the classroom.
Excellence and Avila: a tradition for over 100 years.
